Emily Burke
I believe that financial clarity begins with understanding what matters most. My path into financial planning developed through a growing interest in personal finance during my twenties, when I began to see how thoughtful financial decisions can shape not just outcomes, but the way we live our lives. That realization—combined with a desire to help others gain that same sense of clarity and confidence—ultimately led me to join Birch Street Financial Advisors.
I started my career in the tax arena and quickly found my passion for financial planning by preparing complex planning engagements for executive tax clients while working at KPMG, a Big 4 accounting firm. I left KPMG to join a start-up tax boutique CPA and the law firm where I delved deeper into comprehensive planning by adding estate planning engagements. After having my second child, I started a sister tax firm focused on tax consulting and compliance for individuals, estates and trusts. The practice grew as my children grew. Throughout my career, I have combined tax and financial planning. Tax-focused financial planning allows me to provide an in-depth assessment and analysis of retirement and estate planning scenarios for pre-retirees and retirees since these decisions are heavily tax-driven. Through Birch Street Financial Advisors, I work with you to define and work toward financial goals, while providing you a holistic approach to providing financial security and live the life you’d relive.
Growing up, I had a unique perspective on this profession watching my mom build her career in tax-focused financial planning and the impact it had on the clients she served. I’ve seen firsthand how integrating tax strategy with long-term planning can create meaningful opportunities for individuals and families. Today, I am proud to be part of continuing that work—helping clients align their financial resources with their values and supporting them through important life transitions with care and intention.
At Birch Street, I work alongside our team to support clients in defining their goals and making thoughtful, informed decisions. Whether someone is navigating a transition or preparing for retirement, I am committed to helping simplify complexity and provide a steady, supportive planning experience.
I graduated from Virginia Tech in 2019 with dual bachelor’s degrees in Environmental Studies and Economics. This combination allows me to approach financial planning with both analytical rigor and a long-term perspective—balancing technical insight with an appreciation for sustainability and lasting impact. My prior professional experience further strengthened my project management and client relationship skills, which I draw on in my work with clients today.
To deepen my expertise, I am currently completing coursework through the University of Virginia’s Certified Financial Planning program and working toward obtaining my Enrolled Agent designation through the IRS. I plan to sit for the CFP® exam as I continue building my career in the profession.
I live in Falls Church with my fiancé, Joe, and our Husky, Max. Outside of work, I enjoy coaching part-time at Ballston CrossFit, working on home projects, and spending time in the garden. Staying active and engaged—both physically and mentally—is an important part of how I show up for my work and for the clients we serve.
